MARIA LUISA PARK SEVILLE ARCHIVES

Photos Archives from Travellers Maria Luisa Park Visit Seville trips.

Melchor de Bueras, architect

The door was erected in 1680 as the triumphal arch of María Luisa de Orleáns, first wife of Carlos II and his cousin (both descended from Felipe III), who arrived in Madrid on January 13. In 1690 it was again used as a triumphal entry, this time in honor of Mariana de Neoburgo (Mariana of Palatine Neuburg: Her sister was Holy Roman Empress and mother of Charles VI who claimed the Spanish throne during the was of the Spanish Succession, and another sister was mother of Spanish Queen Elizabeth Farnese….,) second wife of the monarch.

Originally it was in the Carrera de San Jerónimo, on the site of the current Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo, which allegedly was part of the Retiro Park at the time.
It was apparently moved here in 1922.

Inscribed to honor the arrival of Mariana of Neuburg (1667-1740), second wife of Carlos II. Her ancestors were almost all German but she was descended from Juana la Loca and thus 4th cousin once removed of her husband. She was born in Benrath Palace in Düsseldorf,
Her sister was Holy Roman Empress and mother of the Archdujke Charles, eventually claimant of the Spanish crown when her husband died. Support for Charles led to her expulsion from Spain by Philip V. In 1739, being old and sick, she was finally allowed to return to Spain. She settled in the Infantado Palace in Guadalajara, Spain, where she died on 16 July 1740. She was buried in El Escorial Monastery.
Another sister was Queen of Portugal to 1699
Another sister married the Duke of Parma; her daughter was the second wife of the same Felipe V
